Rates

Call out charge is £25, which includes up to the first half hour. Jobs between half and a full hour are charged @ £40. Any time over an hour is charged pro-rata @ £30 per hour.
Examples: 

• Job taking 1-30 minutes would cost £25.
• Job taking 31-60 minutes would cost £40. 
• Job taking 80 minutes would cost £50.

I don't charge travelling time, but more distant customers may be surcharged.

If engaged to fix a specific problem, I will not charge if I can't fix it. However, this doesn't include where the problem is outside what I'm working on (eg, if there is a problem with customer's phone line when I'm setting up broadband).  If I'm aware of possible external problems, I will raise them with the customer before agreeing the work.

Hardware supplied at cost.

Second hand PCs – generally £50-£100, depending on machine specification.

Background

I started programming at school in the 1960s. I have over 20 years experience working in many large companies as an IT contractor. My involvement with PC support began in 1995, when we bought our first home PC. Getting no support from the supplier, I learned to fix it myself. Then I built myself a PC, and soon family and friends were taking advantage of my expertise. After my wife became a teacher and ICT co-ordinator I started doing support for her school (while still holding down a full-time job in IT). In 2005 I set up full time as a support technician – I currently support 4 primary schools.

I have received  Microsoft’s Much Valued Professional (MVP) award for the last 4 years.
